How we deliver Psychiatric services

Our psychiatry services combine flexibility with accessibility. We offer both in-person and virtual appointments—virtual services reach patients anywhere in New Mexico, while in-person visits at our Belen and Albuquerque offices provide the direct connection many seek.

We also provide Open Access, our unique walk-in or virtual urgent care model for mental health available Tuesdays in Belen and Albuquerque, and Wednesdays in Belen.

We work alongside you in your healing

Your treatment plan is built together. We listen to what matters most and adjust our approach as you progress. This partnership between provider and patient creates real, lasting change.

Questions

Find answers about our psychiatric services and treatment approach.

How does medication help?

Medication can be a powerful tool in your recovery. It addresses the chemical imbalances that often underlie conditions like depression, anxiety, and bipolar disorder. Our Psychiatric Nurse Practitioners use medication as part of a comprehensive approach to help you feel more like yourself.

What should I expect initially?

Your first evaluation will be a conversation about your history. Your provider will ask you about your life prior to now in an effort to get to know the whole person and find the best recommendations for you. Please bring a list of any current medications to the first appointment.

Do I have to take medications if they are recommended?

Absolutely not. These are ways in which we think medication can help, but you can change your mind anytime. Though, it's important to know, once you do start, please allow us to help you come off should you want to stop.

How often will I see my provider?

Frequency varies on symptoms you're having and medication you are on. If your provider has put you on a new medication or symptoms are severe, they may want to see you weekly until stable. Once stability is achieved, monthly is our minimum requirement. We take our responsibility very seriously and a monthly medication management appointment is best practice in checking on your status. This can be virtual or in-person-whichever your prefer.

Do medications work better if I'm also in therapy?

Absolutely. These complementary services work together synergistically to create the most comprehensive and effective mental health outcome. When integrated thoughtfully, they address multiple dimensions of well-being and support lasting therapeutic progress.

Can I get controlled substances here?

Our prescribers can prescribe controlled substances after three conditions are met: They believe this is the best avenue for treatment, other treatments have been tried and failed, and there has been a relationship established. They will not prescribe these medications on the first meeting.

If my provider is not a good fit, may I request another?

Absolutely. We believe progress can only be made in relationship. If your initial provider is not a good fit, just send an email to our Executive Director, Brandy Castillo, with the reason for the request and a change and she will assist brandy@heartsoulnm.com
